Structure-Dependent Tone Sandhi in Real and Nonce Words in Shanghai Wu
نویسندگان
چکیده
Disyllabic sequences in Shanghai Wu undergo different types of tone sandhi depending on their syntactic structure: modifier-noun compounds spread the initial tone across the disyllable, while verb-noun phrases often maintain the final tone and neutralize the nonfinal tone, especially if the phrase has a low frequency of occurrence. We investigated the productivity of the two tone sandhi types through 48 speakers’ productions of real and nonce words. Our results showed that Shanghai speakers were sensitive to the structure-dependency of the sandhi pattern and performed different sandhis according to the disyllable’s syntactic structure in both real and nonce words. But in nonce words, the productivity of each specific sandhi varies, and the difference between leftand right-dominant sandhis is attenuated. Additionally, neither the leftor right-dominant sandhi involves complete tonal neutralization. These results indicate that in order to arrive at a full picture of the sandhi patterning, traditional impressionistic descriptions need to be complemented by instrumental data.

Structure-dependent tone sandhi in real and nonce disyllables in Shanghai Wu
Disyllabic sequences in Shanghai Wu undergo different types of tone sandhi depending on their structure: phonological words (e.g., modifier–nouns) spread the initial tone across the disyllable, while phrases (e.g., nonlexicalized verb–nouns) maintain the final tone and level the contour of the nonfinal tone. We investigated the productivity of the two tone sandhi types through 48 speakers’ prod...
متن کاملUsing Nonce-probe Tests and Auditory Priming to Investigate Speakers’ Phonological Knowledge of Tone Sandhi
Recent phonological research has shown that speakers may both overlearn and underlearn from lexical patterns of their language. This points to the importance of experimental studies to the construction of phonological analysis. In this paper, I explore the use of nonce-probe tests and auditory priming in the investigation of speakers’ tacit knowledge of tone sandhi in a variety of Chinese diale...
متن کاملProductivity in Taiwanese Tone Sandhi Redux
This paper aims to re-examine the issues of psychological reality of the Taiwanese Tone Circle with a novel experimental setting. Previous results from various wug tests all suggested that the tone sandhi rules should be unproductive, due to the obtained poor correct response rates (in general below 20%~30%; [3, 4, 6, 8]). But it is important to note that these results are confounded with the f...
متن کاملContextually dependent cue weighting for a laryngeal contrast in Shanghai Wu
Phonological categories are often differentiated by multiple phonetic cues. This paper reports a production and perception study of a laryngeal contrast in Shanghai Wu that is not only cued in multiple dimensions, but also cued differently on different manners (stops, fricatives, sonorants) and in different positions (non-sandhi, sandhi). Acoustic results showed that although this contrast has ...
متن کاملPost-focus pitch register lowering as a phrasal marker - An acoustic study of focus and phrasing in Shanghai Chinese
This paper reports an experiment designed to investigate whether post-focus tonal realization is constrained by prosodic structure in Shanghai Chinese (SH). Previous studies have shown that in SH, focus expanded the f0 range of bi-syllabic tone sandhi words while pitch register lowering, instead of pitch range compression, was consistently found on post-focus bi-syllabic tone sandhi words. The ...
